There has been a growing trend among Bhagavatas (Bhajan professionals) not bothering to do nityahnikas such as Sandhyavandana. There is one Pauranika cum bhajan professional (do not want to name the person, since this story could be applicable to many others too) who talks very high about the necessity of doing Sandhyavandana etc, but himself not bothering to adhere to these. I witnessed this particular person at least in a couple of occasions. On one occasion, during evening, he was talking to me with a pancha patra full of water (his host had just then given water in the pancha patra for doing sandhya vandana). After about 20 minutes of talking all mundane things, he told me, "I have finished Sandhyavandana. Give this panchapatra to the people in the house". In another occasion, it was madhyahnika. Essentially same thing happened. No exaggeration. I do not think there is any sastra which declares that talking to me is equivalent to doing sandhyavandana, nor do I think that the pauranika cum bhagavata is such a elevated soul to simulataneously do both sandhyavandana and talking mundane things to me (of course using no water from panchapatra). I do not know of a tradition of doing sandhyavandana without using even a single drop of water; even if there is one such tradition, why keep a panchapatra full of water for that?
The problem I see here is 3 fold
1. The basic problem of not doing sandhyavandana
2. The person preaches sandhyavandana from the vyasapeeta without adhering to it by himself
3. He tells lies saying that he has done sandhyavandana without even attempting to do it
I know of some people who do these at least for the name sake. Holding the nose (not breath) and talking to mamis (ponnu soukhyama? Chicagolathane irukka? ...). Even this is ok compared to the pauranika cum bhagavata of our story (by the way, this is not a story in the sense of a fiction, but a real one).
There is absolutely no exemption from doing nityahnikas for any one except the ones in turiyasrama. You can leave all these once you stop craving for food, planning your travels (for bhajan utsavas), cannot see anything other than brahman (sarvam brahmamayam). Until then there is no exemption, since it is this very karma which will lead you to that state.
